How ongoing maintenance can prolong the five-star appeal of student properties
Our Sales Director, Tanya Rogers talked to University Business about the importance of bespoke maintenance, and how retaining that ‘first-class feel’ in student buildings creates a desirable living space for students whilst preserving University properties.
She explained that Crystal’s involvement with student accommodation often begins during the initial building stage. In line with the building schedule, Crystal Facilities Management carries out full-build cleans at three key stages:
1. Deep clean – Once the shell of the building is completed we undertake a thorough deep clean of the interior.
2. Pre-clean – A further clean is carried out whilst the building is at ‘fit-out’ stage.
3. Sparkle clean – After all building and installation work is completed we provide an intense clean to prepare the accommodation for its new tenants.
By working closely with our construction partners we can ensure that no area goes untouched, and our inside knowledge of the student building means that we can offer a bespoke service to suit the particular needs of each individual property.
It isn’t just the students who reap the rewards of this higher level of attention, the universities themselves also benefit from their estates being kept in tip-top condition. Ongoing cleaning and maintenance helps preserve buildings and fittings, as opposed to carrying out a big ‘patch up’ at the end of the academic year, which can sometimes result in partial re-fits where damage has been allowed to escalate over the year.

Retaining high living standards throughout the year also has a positive effect on the student’s attitude towards their living quarters. If their surroundings are clean, tidy and in good condition they are likely to maintain this standard for themselves. With this in mind, an investment in ongoing maintenance will ensure that student accommodation continues to retain its five-star appeal, which thankfully couldn’t be further away from the grotty old stereotype of the student halls of the past.
